Bill Mechanic

Through his company, Pandemonium Films, respected industry veteran and independent producer, Bill Mechanic has most recently produced Hacksaw Ridge, nominated for Best Film, and Coraline, nominated as Best Animated Film. Directed by Mel Gibson, and starring Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, and Teresa Palmer, based on a Humanitas-winnng script by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight, Hacksaw Ridge received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor, and received two Oscars — for Editing and Sound Mixing. Previously he produced the Oscar-nominated, BAFTA-winning Coraline, directed by Henry Selick and The New World (directed by Terrence Malick) as well as Dark Water (directed by Walter Salles). He produced (along with Adam Shankman) the multi-Emmy nominated 82nd Academy Awards.

In addition to Pandemonium, Mechanic serves on the prestigious Board of Governors for the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he serves as a Vice President of the Academy Foundation.

Prior to Pandemonium, Mechanic was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment for seven years. As Chairman and CEO, Mechanic oversaw all operations of the studio including worldwide feature film production, marketing and distribution activities, as well as all worldwide operations for Fox Video, Fox Interactive, Licensing and Merchandising, and Fox Music.

During Mechanic’s tenure at Fox, Mechanic oversaw production on the most successful movie in history, Titanic, which not only won a record 11 Academy Awards but also was the highest grossing film upon release. At Fox, he also was responsible for the Oscar-winning Best Picture Braveheart, and two of the most successful series in history, Ice Age and X Men. In all, Fox films during the period were nominated for a total of 82 Academy Awards.  Under his reign, the company produced such hit films as Minority Report, Moulin Rouge, Cast Away, Independence Day, There’s Something About Mary, Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition, Boys Don’t Cry, Mrs. Doubtfire, Speed, True Lies, Die Hard: With A Vengeance, The Full Monty, Dr. Dolittle, The X-Files, The Thin Red Line, Ever After, William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. He created Fox Searchlight, Fox Animation, and Fox 2000.

Under Mechanic, Twentieth Century Fox in 1998 was the number one studio in worldwide box-office gross. That same year, Fox Music produced five of the top ten selling soundtracks: Titanic, Hope Floats, Dr. Dolittle, Bulworth, and Ally McBeal. In addition, Fox has produced six of the top ten grossing movies of all time, and six of the top ten selling live action videos – both domestically and internationally – including the bestselling video in history, Titanic. For three years of Mechanic’s tenure, Fox produced the number one grossing movies worldwide with Die Hard: With A Vengeance, Independence Day and Titanic.
